Are You Meandering Down Your Pier? by John Attardo

Scriptures: Proverbs 22:17-21, Proverbs 15:15, Proverbs 16:9, Joel 2:28-32

Good morning, Thank you for joining us today. My name is John Attardo and I have been blessed to be a part of Life Gate Church for 19 years. I want to thank Pastor Delbert for giving me this opportunity to speak with you today. This is one of the most challenging projects I have been involved. In my new position with Verizon I am in front of CEO CFO COO of fortune 500 and 50 companies, and I am calm, confident and determined to get my point across. Usually, the impact of my meeting with these C-level people is in Millions of dollars. But here, speaking to you today it’s a different story. It really takes me out of comfort zone out of my little Box. I can’t pinpoint why this happens, but it does. Maybe it’s because I am trying to provide a message impacting your lives to the point blessings start to happen in the millions.

You’re probably saying why you would accept the opportunity of speaking to us if this takes you out of your comfort zone. Is it so you can feel sorry for me and say “Bless his heart. He is nervous. Are you getting paid financially?” No. So why am I up here doing this? First of all, this man, Pastor Delbert, and his incredible family has accepted me and opened my eyes to understand. Most of all they’ve helped me apply the Bible to my life and my family’s daily lives. Secondly,   setting up this sermon helps me in my walk with God. I would not miss this opportunity for a million dollar order. The point here is why I would meander down my walk (Pier) in life without taking chances. Today we will discuss “are you meandering down Your Pier of Opportunities?” Are you walking each plank wondering why you’re not maximizing the opportunity to change your life? I want to discuss your pier of opportunities today. Specifically, how you can maximize each to their pinnacle, so it changes your life. Let’s get started

Last time I talked we discuss how to recognize opportunities and choose the ones that will maximize your life. We recognized fear as emotion change our behavior in a positive or negative way. If we look at our opportunities in man’s eyes, they are huge to tackle. We will just say forget it and remain where we are in Life (comfort zone). If you bring in the Holy Spirit and have God fearing people involved, the fear is still there but it’s manageable to the point we can maximize opportunities. We discussed how we can have many opportunities cross our paths. There were 5 points we mentioned:

1) Integrity and honesty

2) Be available and humble yourself

3) Pray – Pray often alone and with others

4) Use your resources wisely

5) Choose your friends wisely

(MSG) Proverbs 22:17-21 Listen carefully to my wisdom; take to heart what I can teach you. You’ll treasure its sweetness deep within; you’ll give it bold expression in your speech. To make sure your foundation is trust in GOD, I’m laying it all out right now just for you. I’m giving you thirty sterling principles– tested guidelines to live by. Believe me–these are truths that work, and will keep you accountable to those who sent you.

Then we discuss how we can choose the right opportunity. We said “if we:”

  1. a) Seek counsel
  2. b) Discuss with family
  3. c) Pray corporately
  4. d) Pray secretly where ever and when you can
  5. e) Tithe and give alms

You would be able to pick the right opportunity.

Let me correct myself with Tithes. Last time I talked I mention how important this is, but I said it must come from your heart if it doesn’t then don’t give. I was terribly wrong. You continue to give even if your heart isn’t there. By giving your heart will soften and eventually you will give, and you will give vigorously. It’s obedience. To obey is better than sacrifice (1 Sa 15:22).

(MSG) Proverbs 15:15 A miserable heart means a miserable life; a cheerful heart fills the day with song.

I am a good example of this. There have been times where situations have occurred in my life, and my heart was not where it was supposed to be. Praying was tough. It was very challenging to be humble. But I continued to GIVE and eventually this brought my heart back to the right place. So the bottom line, Give no matter where your heart is because giving will change your heart and bring it to the place where blessing or opportunities will occur.

Let’s refer back to the steps choosing the right opportunity. Did you have success with many opportunities crossing your path? I hope you had opportunities, and you picked one. So how did it affect your life? Has this changed your life? Finding the correct opportunity is just the beginning. You are at the door of opportunity. What happens next? How do we take this opportunity and get the most out of it? How do we allow this opportunity to take us to the next level or next opportunity? Don’t you wonder why some people seem to move up the ladder quicker than others? “Why is it him and not me? I am following the criteria you discussed. So, why am I not advancing in this opportunity?” Have you noticed how some people advance to the next opportunity with ease or without having to work up a sweat? All these questions and statements can be answered with two words: Game Plan. These successful and determined people have a game plan inside their opportunity. This game plan is to maximize their opportunity. So what is a game plan? Why is it important? What is the purpose of a game plan?

(MSG) Proverbs 16:9 We plan the way we want to live, but only GOD makes us able to live it.

(MSG) Joel 2:28-32 “And that’s just the beginning: After that – “I will pour out my Spirit on every kind of people: Your sons will prophesy, also your daughters. Your old men will dream, your young men will see visions. I’ll even pour out my Spirit on the servants, men and women both. I’ll set wonders in the sky above and signs on the earth below: Blood and fire and billowing smoke, the sun turning black and the moon blood-red, Before the Judgment Day of GOD, the Day tremendous and awesome. Whoever calls, ‘Help, GOD!’ gets help. On Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be a great rescue–just as GOD said. Included in the survivors are those that GOD calls.

A game plan usually has something you want to accomplish. It’s something you have a vision towards. It is ultimately a plan bringing out the best in you so you could reach the pinnacle of your opportunity. If we look at the Bible, we see Noah and Moses had opportunities cross their paths. They capitalized on each of their opportunities. They each listened and developed a Game Plan ultimately achieving the pinnacle of their opportunity. Both of their game plans were strategically full of detail with a timetable. Both game plans would be attainable because God was involved. (What were their opportunities?)

Noah built the ark. He had a game plan on the size and length required to house every living being God would send him.  He had a game plan for food for all creatures, but what if he had said, “I’m not going to do it”?

If we look at Moses, he freed the Jewish people from slavery. He had a game plan as to how he was going to do this. What if he by-passed this opportunity?  What would have been the outcome?

If you look at the Ultimate opportunity anyone can have, you look no further than Jesus. His opportunity to open the gates of Heaven for all our souls is the pinnacle of all opportunities. His game plan was very strategic with a timeline and full of detail. His opportunity is relevant because he is GOD. No one else can save the souls of men.

All three not only achieve the opportunity asked of them by GOD.  All three events altered and changed society and the world.  How or why are we comparing those major events in the Bible to our opportunities? What I am trying to say is your opportunities are just important to GOD as the ones we just discussed. This is why we can’t take for granted any opportunity crossing our paths. We need to take this seriously and make sure we attain the highest pinnacle possible. This can only be achieved by having GODS involvement.

Following is a set of rules you can apply to maximize your opportunities. If you follow these rules with these points discussed, success will occur. Let look at these rules.

Opportunity (goal) I want to achieve and be held accountable by significant other.

Date Started:  September 20th, 2015

Date Ended:   September 25th, 2016

1) Specific – Clear and well defined

2)  Measurable – set dates and amounts throughout the year so you can measure the degree of your success. Also celebrate each milestone.

3)  Attainable – Make sure it is possible to achieve what you set.

4)  Relevant – Goals should be relevant to the direction you want your life and career to take

  5)  Time Bound – Your goal must have a deadline. This way you can celebrate your success.

Remember to post your goal in a visible spot. By having it written and seen will make you think about it and hold you accountable

If we take Smart Goal Template and apply it to our opportunities, we will have a good shot at achieving our goals. If we add: a) Seek counsel: b) Discuss with family: c) Pray corporately: d) Pray secretly where ever and when you can: e) Tithe and give alms, you will definitely achieve the pinnacle of your opportunity. More importantly you will be in Gods favor. When you are in Gods favor, you start to see more opportunities advance your way. You become the one making the next opportunity look easy or without having to work up a sweat. This is of paramount importance, so let me ask you, are you meandering down Your Pier of Opportunities, or are you doing everything you can in the eyes of GOD? Not man. Let’s pray.
