Baptism For Remission Of Sin – sermon notes

What is remission? Say a person took chemo. The chemo worked. We say the cancer is in remission. This means the cancer is losing its power. The cancer is dying and the person is becoming more and more alive. The person is pardoned from the death cancer could bring. This is remission. Baptism in the name of Jesus Christ is for the remission of sins!

What Doth Hinder Me to be Baptized

What Doth Hinder Me to be Baptized by Delbert Young

This book is designed to help us understand water baptism, its purpose and answer questions...

In Acts 2, we find the first water baptism after the ascension of Christ. It is the original seed of Christian baptism for the church. It is the baptism from which all other baptisms spring. It was the day of Pentecost. In the upper room, the 120 received the Holy Spirit. Out on the street, Peter preached. At the end of his sermon, the people responded.

Acts 2:37-38 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and BE BAPTIZED EVERY ONE OF YOU IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Preaching should prick the hearts of people. That is the “beginning feeling” of the need for baptism inside a person away from God. It is a good feeling. It is a welcomed feeling. A person somehow knows that the God of the universe is dealing with their heart. Those on Pentecost day asked, “… what shall we do…” They wanted someone to tell them the way to God. They wanted someone to tell them the way into the kingdom of which Peter spoke. It used to be by physical circumcision. What did they need to do now?

Peter said, EVERY ONE OF YOU… Every believer is to be baptized. There are no exceptions. Here is a Greek word study on the word baptized.

baptized – baptizo – to make whelmed (i.e. fully wet); used only (in the N.T.) of ceremonial ablution [washing of one’s body], of the ordinance of Christian baptism

Basically, baptism is a total washing. Only the New Testament uses it. At that time, there was the baptism of John the Baptist. It was the washing (baptism) of John. John’s message was repentance. He encouraged people to repent from the system of Judaism and have a relationship with God. This would save them from the wrath to come upon that generation. If a person agreed with John, they went into the water and John “washed,” or baptized them. Then there was the baptism of Jesus Christ. The message of Christ was the kingdom of God. Jesus said that God had an abundant life for his children. If people agreed with Jesus, then into the water they went for “washing,” or baptism. The baptism became a public identification with a leader and his message.

Peter said, IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST…

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

This is somewhat interesting. Jesus said to be baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

However, when you study, they never baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost – NEVER! No one in the scriptures was ever baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Following are several passages showing this fact.

Philip preached in Samaria. The Holy Spirit had not yet fallen, but that did not stop Philip from baptizing in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Acts 8:16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

Peter at Cornelius’ house saw the Holy Spirit fall and then commanded the baptism in the name of the Lord.

Acts 10:48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

The apostle Paul also baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. In the following passage, Paul met followers of John the Baptist at Ephesus.

Acts 19:4-5 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

Galatians 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

I try my best to teach and do the Bible as accurately as I can. I do not think you would want me any other way. So, I baptize in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Hang with me. I am about to tell you exactly why.

Paul then said, FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS… Some translations say forgiveness of sins.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

remission – aphesis – freedom; pardon

The word does not mean only forgiveness. The word is REMISSION. It means freedom and pardon. Let’s say a person is diagnosed with cancer and then takes chemo therapy. The chemo works and we say that the cancer is in REMISSION. That means the cancer is losing its power. The cancer is dying and the person is becoming more and more alive. Freedom from the deadly power of cancer comes to the person. They are pardoned from the death that cancer might bring.

That is the thought here. BAPTISM IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST IS FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS! We looked at Acts 19:4-5.

Acts 19:4-5 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

John’s baptism – being baptized in the name of John – was for repentance. Repentance means changing directions. The baptism of the Lord Jesus Christ is for THE REMISSION OF SINS. Sin dies and I live! Sin is weaker and I am stronger. Sin is in REMISSION. The things that try to kill me and weaken me from experiencing the abundant life that Jesus came to give me, weaken and die. I become victorious and live the abundant life.

That is what being baptized in the name of Jesus Christ is to do for us! That is the name the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit wants you baptized into. Baptism is more than a Christian ordinance. It is more than a public confession of a person’s commitment to be a Christ follower by a washing. Baptism is a huge step in the pardoning from and the setting free from the deadly cancer of sin. It forces sin into remission.

Let’s watch this happen with those about to be baptized. Let’s rejoice and be thrilled with them and for them!
