What Doth Hinder Me to be Baptized

  1. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 …The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Today is Palm Sunday. I want to talk about the memorial we are to remember. Jesus chose Communion as his memorial. Of all the ways he could have said to remember, concerning him, the one way he said to remember him in is Communion. Jesus said REMEMBER ME THIS WAY. Some call it “The Eucharist,” which means gratefulness and thanksgiving. Some reference it as “The Lord’s Table.”

Many of us do things repeatedly, year after year, and never really know why we do them. It is this way with many concerning Communion. Why do we have communion? Jesus said to remember him this way, but why? Imagine if you will, Jesus Christ knowing he was only hours away from his arrest and crucifixion. Imagine him reclined at a table with his twelve closest friends. They ate together many times this way during the years, but something special was about to happen and here is what it was. Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them. He said, “This is my body, which is for you; DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.” The loaf is Christ’s body. Jesus broke off twelve pieces of bread, handing a piece to each man. Jesus gave each a piece of his body. You too have your piece of the body of Christ. This is why after Paul explained Communion in 1 Corinthians 11, he followed it with the teaching of the Body of Christ in chapter 12. Jesus said FOR YOU… Everything Jesus did he did FOR YOU. He wants you to remember and appreciate what he did. Do you? Do you appreciate your part? After they ate the Passover meal, Jesus took the cup, poured red wine into it, and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.” The New Covenant is for you. Jesus wants you to remember and appreciate it. Do you? Or, do you simply take it for granted?

This bread/wine thing probably did not make a lot of sense to the disciples exactly as it does not make a lot of sense to many today, but it meant something to Jesus. One can still feel and sense the emotion in it. He knew his body was about to be made sin. This is a unique thought. His body would be beaten, scourged, nailed to a cross, pierced with a spear, and made to bleed and die. Why?

2 Corinthians 5:21 For HE HATH MADE HIM TO BE SIN for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Jesus was not, like an animal sacrifice in the Old Testament, only to cover sin. GOD MADE HIM SIN! It was sin arrested. It was sin mocked. This was sin beaten. This was sin scourged. It was sin bleeding. It was sin nailed to the cross and crucified. This was sin dying. IT WAS SIN! When a person receives Jesus andREMEMBERS what Jesus did on his cross, their sin is arrested, not them. Their sin is beaten, not them. Their sin is scourged, not them. Their sin is mocked, not them. Their sin bleeds and their sin dies, NOT THEM! God does not cover your sin. He kills it! The thing that would, not could, send you to an eternal hell is crucified. This is how you, and the only way you, become the righteousness of God. Your sin is covered by the blood of Jesus. Your sin is crucified. Are you grateful? Are you thankful? Do you appreciate what Jesus did FOR YOU? He said REMEMBER ME THIS WAY!

    COMMUNION ENCOURAGES US TO:

    1. LOOK WITHIN.

1 Corinthians 11:28-30 A man ought to EXAMINE HIMSELF before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.

I want you to know there is strength, health, and life in Communion. It is important to have communion for it causes us to take a LOOK WITHIN. When you examine yourself and LOOK WITHIN, what do you see? Are you where you need to be with God? I am not asking if you go to church. Are there things within keeping you from being close to God? Are there sins? Perhaps you have never come to the Lord or maybe you once came, but fell away. Then today, allow the bread and juice to arrest, beat, scourge, crucify, kill, and bury those things. Some may look within and see despair and hopelessness. You can receive hope as you begin to LOOK WITHIN and allow Christ to deal with those things. He will hold you and comfort you giving you brighter tomorrows.

    1. LOOK BACK.

Exodus 12:26-27 And when your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ then TELL THEM, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.'” Then the people bowed down and worshiped.

The children of Israel were to remember the time God delivered them from bondage. It was a special God Memory. What God Memory is most special to you? As you take Communion, LOOK BACK at the wonderful things Jesus did FOR YOU – a miracle, healing, salvation. Be grateful. Tell your children what this ceremony means to you – your God Memory. Tell your friends. Some may say, “I do not have a God Memory.” Jesus wants to change this today. Come to him and let him begin a journey with you, which will give you God Memories.

    1. LOOK AHEAD.

1 Corinthians 11:26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

What are you looking forward to with God? Are you looking forward to a loved one coming to Jesus? Are you looking forward to enjoying life? I am looking forward to so many things and one thing is for certain. One day, every one of us will literally die. They will bury your body. After this, to what do you look forward? You can look forward to being with Christ in glory. Or, you can dread and fear an eternal hell.

I want this week to be a time of REMEMBERING. This is called “passion week.” What Jesus did, he did for us and asked us to REMEMBER HIM THIS WAY. Next week, we will celebrate his resurrection.

As they come to serve you the bread and cup, I will give us a few minutes to LOOK WITHIN, LOOK BACK and LOOK AHEAD. LOOK WITHIN. What do you see? Do you like what you see? If not arrest it right now. Take a moment and LOOK BACK. What God Memories do you have? Be grateful. If you have none, begin today making many. Take a moment and LOOK AHEAD. To what are you looking forward to in God? What promises has he made to you? If you do not have any, receive him now as your Lord and savior. Most of all, know at this moment what you can look forward to for eternity? Will it be hellish, or glorious? Please hold your elements and we will stand after those minutes and have COMMUNION – common union – together.
